  • What I hope the researchers learn about treatments for stable angina…

“I have a fear of having another heart attack because I am conscious of the fact that I have a heart issue. I have limitations, not because of pain, but because of the risk that stops me from doing daily activities. I lost mobility in one leg due to an artery disease and had to have it amputated. I wish to start becoming active to prevent the loss of the other leg, but the fear stops me.”

  • What I hope the researchers learn about treatments for stable angina…

“Treatment is important to enable me to live a happier life, eliminating pain and discomfort and allowing me to interact with people and other things I enjoy doing.”

  • What I hope the researchers learn about treatments for stable angina…

“If the medication could speed up the end results to feeling better, that would be ideal.”

  • What I hope the researchers learn about treatments for stable angina…

“Finding the best treatment to be able to do activity and exercise. One of the things with exercise is that you use up more oxygen…what the medications do is allow the blood flow to the areas of the body that demand more oxygen to those areas that need it.”

Do you think it is important for aging adults, like you, to participate in LIVEBETTER? If yes, why?

The reason is because as you get older, with health issues, you want to know more about it, about the medication and the treatment for it. All of this to have a better quality of life, to live better.

How valuable do you think the LIVEBETTER study is for people living with Stable angina?

I think if this study has the results of showing which medicines are better for the elderly-for older adults, then I think it would be 100% effective and will give us, the elderly, a better life to live better. It will give the cardiologist the knowledge of which medications are better to give the elderly. There are few studies for older people and I think it will give results that will benefit my children and my grandchildren. Even though I am unable to be in the study, my small part in the study, makes me feel like I’m contributing to society for my family’s health.

What is a quote to live by/ what is a quote that you think would fit LIVEBETTER?

A quote to live by that matches this study “Live each day to the fullest” and “ Try each day, to live as fully as you can and to help someone else.”

Do you think it is important for family members/friends (who help older adults) to participate in LIVEBETTER? If yes, why?

Looking at the special health needs associated with my aging parents and finding innovative ways to support their quality of life is very important to me. This age group may react differently to procedures and medications, and a specific focus on this age group as one cohort is very important before drawing conclusions about the effectiveness of any given approach.

What is the most important factor to consider when providers recommend new heart medications to older adults?

First and most importantly -- think of their overall wellbeing. Change is incredibly hard. You need to know what their baseline cognitive functioning is, and what impact the medication might have on their status – delirium / confusion happens so easily with the older population. Think about polypharmacy implications – review their entire list of medications. Think about their renal kidney function -- some medications work in ways that make the elderly prone to urinary tract infections (UTIs).

What advice would you give to other family members or friends who are caring for older adults who are considering participating in LIVEBETTER?

I would share my journey with my parents -- how important it is to improve or maintain their quality of life, and encourage people not to be afraid to explore all options. It is incredibly important to understand the patient and/or family’s goals of care, their beliefs, what motivates them, and what fears they might have. Through research, we learn of alternate approaches to heart health which can improve quality of life for older patients, which might also be important to my generation and my children’s generation down the line.
